Chorleywood Parish Council is launching its annual campaign to promote and protect ground nesting birds on Chorleywood Common, implementing measures from 1 March to 31 July 2025. The initiative focuses on protecting vulnerable species, including the red-listed skylark, by requesting that dogs are kept on short leads in designated heathland and meadow areas.
“Chorleywood Common is a vital wildlife refuge in our increasingly urbanised area,” says Head Ranger, Daniel Du Gard. “With environmental pressures from developments like HS2 and ongoing housing expansion, protecting our local wildlife has never been more crucial.”
The Council’s campaign includes:
- Request for dogs to be kept on leads no longer than 2 metres in key nesting areas
- Installation of informational notices across the Common
- Public awareness campaign through social media, website updates, and local press
- On-site rangers available to answer questions and provide guidance
Please see the guide for keeping dogs on lead and the full statement which includes a map showing the breeding zones.
