Chorleywood’s concerns heard on the Local Cycling and Walking Improvement Plan

There was a huge response to the Chorleywood proposals in HCC / TRDC’s consultation on county-wide measures to encourage cycling and walking. We support encouraging both, but Chorleywood is very hilly, and our lanes are very narrow. Realistically, the options are limited.

We’re pleased to report the following decisions on the problematic consultation suggestions, recognising that cars still have to be used here in many situations:

• No modal filter on Shepherd’s Lane
• No one-way restriction of Common Road
• No closure to vehicles of Shepherds Bridge
• No cycle route on the Common

We’re also very pleased to hear they’re looking at plans for:

• Cycle-friendly improvements to the junctions on Shepherds Lane’s and the William Penn crossing
• Continuing a cycle route along the A404 beyond Common Road to St Clement Danes.

TRDC Officers still want ideas to improve cycling routes in Chorleywood, given the climate agenda. We met them on Thursday and suggested:

• Clearing the Shepherds Lane bike gulleys regularly. We also suggest widening them, they’re too narrow and full of hedges and leaf debris to be usable
• Bike-centric criteria for the potholes at the edges of our narrow lanes!; Eg: potholes at the edges of Shepherds Lane & Long Lane are very dangerous for both cyclists and pedestrians, but they don’t meet the car-centric HCC criteria for repair. LCWIP funding to make our lanes more friendly by fixing these edge potholes would be great!
