Long-standing TRDC Councillor Martin Trevett and previous CRA Chair Owen Edis started the Friends of Chorleywood Signal Box in 2020. The listed signal box was refurbished by TfL, and they wanted to put it to good use for the community. CRA launched a survey on “The Future of our Locally Listed Signal Box” in the CRA Newsletter: August 2020 which got an amazing 117 replies, with the majority in favour of a heritage museum & exhibition to celebrate the Met Line coming to Chorleywood.
Our CRA Newsletter: March 2021 included an update on the FoCSB project, and a link to their website with the results of the survey.
Sadly, after a huge effort the idea proved impossible when TfL lawyers insisted on FoCSB taking on unlimited liability, a demand that a group of local volunteers cannot accept. However, research for the museum was published in an excellent book by FoCSB Committee member Hugh Howes: Rails to Chorleywood.
FoCSB has now been wound up, and in accordance with their constitution their remaining funds donated to CRA. We assure the Friends that the money will be put to good use, to benefit Chorleywood residents. The FoCSB website lives on as a reminder of their work.
Our thanks to the Friends for the project, especially to founders Owen Edis and Cllr Martin Trevett. Martin sadly passed away on February 27th. He dedicated his life to Chorleywood, serving as one of our district councillors from 1986 to 2023, when he stood down due to ill health. Thanks Martin, with fond memories of all you did for Chorleywood. One of the good guys!
