Recent updates include:
- Herts residents fall victim to job scam. The victims reported losses totalling more than £200,000, with two residents from Cheshunt and Watford losing £70,000 each. Residents from Broxbourne, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, and St Albans were also targeted by the scam. The fraudsters targeted job seekers by posing as reputable recruiters, who convinced the victims to complete daily tasks through an app. The victims were then advised that to receive payments for completed tasks they needed to pay an equivalent amount.
- New quishing alert: £3.5 million lost last year to fraudulent QR codes. A new alert has been issued by Action Fraud, warning about quishing, a form of phishing where a fraudulent QR code is scanned, designed to steal personal and financial information. The warning encourages people to stay vigilant and double check QR codes to see if they are malicious, or have been tampered with, before scanning them online or in public spaces. Action Fraud can reveal that quishing happens most frequently in car parks, with criminals using stickers to tamper with QR codes on parking machines.
