After four years of fund-raising and just over a year of building, Mission EmployAble’s Café on the Common finally opened its doors to an eager public on Monday, January 16.

Erica Bendall, Mission EmployAble Trustee said: ‘The atmosphere on opening day was terrific, with couples, individuals and dog walkers raving about their experience. Our interns spent the previous week training in the café, so they were ship-shape for opening day and all our visitors said that their visit was worth waiting for.

Uniquely, the café is run by Mission EmployAble, a social enterprise charity founded in 2018. Each year, the charity trains a team of interns with learning disabilities, giving them the skills and confidence to find paid work when they finish their year’s programme at Mission EmployAble.

Café on the Common is open every day from 9am to 5pm during the winter, serving homemade breakfasts, light lunches and cakes.

As part of the aim to be as sustainable as possible, Café on the Common has teamed up with Ecoffee Cup’s reusable cup scheme giving buyers of take-away drinks 3 options:

  • Bring your favourite mug or resuable KeepCup
  • Buy any Ecoffee Cups from a range of colours
  • Join the Café on the Common reusable cup scheme

Or, come in and take a seat to enjoy table service.
