Staying Safe

One of the best ways of staying informed is by signing up for the excellent OWL emails from Herts Police.  Sign up directly at  Recent notifications include:

  • Beware of scammers posing as Senior Police investigation officers stating to the victim they were wanted for an insurance fraud.  The scammers even “spoofed” the control room phone number making this appear even more genuine.
  • Beware of Door to Door Fish Sellers using pressure tactics and ‘try before you buy’ offers selling inferior products at higher than market prices.  Hertfordshire Trading Standards advise that you only buy fish from a reputable fishmonger at an established shop or stall, or from one with a regular pre-arranged round.
  • Virgin Media Faults -Telephone Scams.  Victims have reported a fault to Virgin Media and then received a call from someone purporting to be from Virgin in relation to the reported fault.  Genuine Service Providers should never ask for bank details in such circumstances, nor should they require access to customer’s computers/devices.

Remember that a bank will NEVER contact you to ask you to move money to another account.
