Many of the roads and lanes in Chorleywood don’t have street lights or pavements, so please be very careful when walking on them, especially after dark. It sometimes feels like people think that because they can see and hear the cars, the drivers can see them too. Not true!

If you’re wearing dark clothes and walking with your back to the traffic, drivers won’t see you till they’re very close, if at all. So use the torch on your phone, and follow the Highway Code’s great advice in Rules 2 and 3 for Pedestrians. In summary:

  • If there is no pavement, walk on the right-hand side to see oncoming traffic
  • Before a sharp right-hand bend cross over to help oncoming traffic see you
  • Wear or carry something light-coloured, bright or fluorescent
  • When it’s dark, it’s even better to use reflective materials
