Oak Processionary Moth – what you need to know

Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) is an oak tree pest that’s prevalent in the south-east of England, including Three Rivers. The caterpillars produce fine hairs that can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and are very harmful to pets.

Three Rivers is in the established zone for OPM, meaning that landowners are responsible for inspecting their oak trees, assessing the risks and arranging treatment where necessary.

If you spot OPM caterpillars or nests on an oak tree owned by Three Rivers District Council, please report it to enquiries@threerivers.gov.uk or call 01923 776611. The Council’s Trees and Woodlands Officers will inspect the tree and assess whether the nests require removal.

If OPM is found on your own oak trees, you must arrange removal. Please do not attempt to remove the nests yourself, as the caterpillar hairs can be harmful. The Forestry Commission can provide advice on professional nest removal services.
